The Impact Of Parental Narcissism Traits And Adolescent Development
ABSTRACT
Narcissism, characterized by intense self-centeredness, often leads to greater control over children's behavior when exhibited by parents. Growing up with a narcissistic parent can result in anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem during childhood and adulthood. This study conducts a qualitative phenomenology exploration of the experiences of adolescents raised by narcissistic parents and its impact on their developmental processes. Through purposive sampling, individuals who have experienced parental narcissism were included to facilitate focused exploration. The literature review examines the parent-child relationship's impact on identity formation, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, academic achievement, and mental well-being, drawing on relevant theoretical frameworks like Social Learning Theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with selected respondents, and thematic analysis was used to identify recurring themes and sub-themes in the interview data. The four main themes identified represent the impact of parental narcissism traits on adolescent development: internalization of narcissistic traits, impaired identity formation, emotional turmoil and dysregulation, and challenges in interpersonal relationships. This study highlights the significant influence of parental narcissism traits on various aspects of adolescent development, shedding light on the experiences of adolescents with narcissistic parents. Valuable insights from this research can aid psychologists, therapists, and educators in developing targeted interventions and support systems to promote the healthy development and well-being of this vulnerable population. The findings underscore the importance of addressing parental narcissism's effects to support adolescents' well-being throughout their lives.
